Grilling the Perfect Salmon

There are a multitude of ways to prepare all salmon types, and each of those salmon meals has its own list of pros and cons. With so many great sockeye salmon recipes out there, it would be hard to run out of ideas! All salmon fish is great for you, no matter the salmon species, but with sockeye salmon nutrition being so high, it's no wonder this is a favorite fish for any kind of meal.

We could go on about cooking salmon forever, however, today we'll focus on grilling. It's a simple, earthy way to prepare this delicious and healthy fish, no matter if you're using copper river salmon, sockeye salmon, keta salmon, chum salmon, king salmon, or any others. Follow along, and prepare yourself for some of the best, easy salmon on the grill that you've ever tasted. 

Where to start

Just about any type of salmon will work on the grill, so you don't need to worry too much if you don't know a lot of about salmon yet. Whether fresh salmon is available where you are, or if you will be using frozen salmon, this recipe will work perfectly. No matter the source, be sure your salmon is wild caught salmon. Wild salmon has a superior taste, texture, and nutritional value.

You'll want to start with a good, thick salmon steak. This hearty cut can stand up to the high heat and a fair amount of rough handling. You can use salmon fillets, but they are a little more delicate, and may be better used with plank recipes. Wild sockeye salmon is the best salmon for grilling, but any type of Alaskan salmon can be cut into suitable steaks, so don't worry too much about the details. You can add a kick of flavor to your meal by trying a salmon brine, but you can also just start grilling right away.

What about planks?

A lot of people enjoy grilling their salmon using the plank method. It's definitely tasty, resulting in a moist and decadent piece of fish. Grilling plank salmon takes a little more prep time than just throwing the salmon on the grill, but it's worth the extra effort. For perfect cedar plank salmon, you will need to soak a suitable cedar plank in salt water, wine, or sake for about 2 hours before you can grill. After that, the instructions are basically the same.

Get grilling!

Salmon steaks or fillets

Olive oil for coating

Salt, pepper, dill, garlic

Lemon juice

For plank salmon: Soaking fluid such as wine, salt water, sake, or cider, and cedar planks

Grill

  

Heat your grill to about 350°F. Brush salmon with olive oil on both sides. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, dill, and garlic, then place fish skin side-down on grill grates. If using planks, lay salmon on planks, then place on grill grates.

Cook for 5 – 6 minutes, then flip. Cook another 3 – 10 minutes, depending on your taste. If using planks, there's no need to flip—the salmon will cook by steaming.

That's it! Simple, fast, delicious grilled salmon. If you've made a lot and ended up with leftovers, grilled salmon is a great ingredient in many other salmon recipes.
