The Perfect Salmon Storm of 2026: Alaska & Russia Harvest Numbers Confirm the Warning

The Warning Nobody Wanted to Believe

Earlier this year, the first scientific reports and salmon forecasts were alarming. The numbers suggested that 2026 could become an exceptionally poor year for Pacific salmon.

At the time, it was difficult to believe the situation could become as bad as those early numbers suggested. We hoped the scientists would be wrong.

Salmon forecasts are never perfect. Runs can arrive late, ocean conditions can change, and a fishery that looks disastrous in June can sometimes recover by August. Even official fisheries scientists emphasize that preseason forecasting carries significant uncertainty.

So we waited. We watched Alaska. We watched Kamchatka, Sakhalin, and the rest of the Russian Far East. We followed pink, chum, sockeye, coho, and Chinook as the season progressed.

The recovery we hoped for largely never came.

Now, with the 2026 fishing season approaching its conclusion, the latest numbers from Alaska and Russia confirm much of what the early reports were warning about.


The Numbers: Alaska

Alaska’s commercial salmon harvest through August 29 reached approximately 83.6 million fish — only 69% of the annual projection. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game report states that none of the five salmon species is likely to reach its annual harvest projection before the season closes.

That is an extraordinary statement. In a typical year, at least some species perform near or above forecast. In 2026, every species is tracking below expectations simultaneously.

The species-level picture:

  • Pink salmon — even-year pinks were expected to be a bright spot in 2026. They were not. Returns to both Southeast Alaska and Prince William Sound came in significantly below forecast, removing what would have been a counterbalance to weakness elsewhere in the harvest.
  • Sockeye — Bristol Bay, the largest sockeye run in the world, had a below-average season. Bristol Bay sockeye is the backbone of the Alaskan salmon commercial fishery by value. A weak Bristol Bay year affects the economics of the entire Alaska salmon industry.
  • Coho — some coho fishing continues into late season, but returns have tracked below projection throughout the summer.
  • Chum — chum returns, important both for domestic markets and for the Japanese market where chum roe (ikura) commands significant prices, have been poor.
  • Chinook (King) — king salmon returns have been a persistent problem for multiple years and 2026 continued that pattern across most regions.

The Numbers: Russia

The Russian Far East picture is even more stark. By September 1, approximately 89,854 metric tons of Pacific salmon had been harvested across all Russian fishing regions, compared with 225,991 metric tons in the same period of the comparison year — a decline of approximately 60.2%.

That is not a rounding error. That is a collapse in the supply coming out of one of the two largest salmon-producing regions on earth.

Kamchatka is the heart of Russian salmon production. The Kamchatka Peninsula produces the majority of Russia’s Pacific salmon harvest each year, including the pink and chum that supply both the domestic Russian market and significant export volumes to Asia and Europe. Sakhalin and the Amur River basin are also major contributors.

When the Russian harvest falls by 60% from the comparison period, the effects ripple through global salmon and roe supply immediately:

  • Red caviar (salmon roe) supply contracts sharply. Russian processors supply a significant portion of the world’s salmon roe — both chum roe for the Japanese Mentaiko market and pink/sockeye roe for international markets. A 60% decline in overall harvest translates directly into a 60%+ reduction in roe availability from Russian sources.
  • Frozen pink salmon fillet supply tightens globally. Russian pink salmon fillets supply European retail and food service markets at scale. With harvest down, that supply is not available to substitute with other sources at equivalent price points.
  • Export volumes to China and Japan decline. Russia is a major supplier of salmon to both markets. Chinese and Japanese buyers who rely on Russian product at contracted volumes will either pay significantly more for what is available or source elsewhere at higher cost.

What Caused the Perfect Salmon Storm of 2026?

Multiple species. Different life cycles. Different spawning regions. Different fisheries. Two sides of the North Pacific. All returning poorly in the same year. Understanding why requires looking at several overlapping factors that created compounding pressure simultaneously.

Ocean Conditions in the North Pacific

Pacific salmon spend one to four years at sea before returning to spawn, depending on species. The ocean conditions they encounter during those years — water temperature, prey availability, competition — determine how many survive to return. Extended periods of anomalously warm water in the North Pacific, which have been documented in recent years, reduce the productivity of the cold-water upwelling zones where salmon feed. Lower prey availability during the ocean phase means higher mortality before fish ever reach the spawning rivers.

The Odd/Even Pink Cycle Problem

Pink salmon have a rigid two-year life cycle and are genetically split into odd-year and even-year populations that rarely interbreed. 2025 was an odd year; 2026 is an even year. Even-year pink runs in many Alaska regions were already tracking below the odd-year populations in recent cycles. When even-year returns disappoint, there is no pink salmon cushion to offset weakness in other species.

Chum and Sockeye Cohort Weakness

Chum and sockeye that returned in 2026 went to sea primarily in 2022 and 2023. Ocean survival rates for those cohorts appear to have been lower than historical averages. The fish that did not survive their ocean phase simply are not in the 2026 return, and there is nothing that can be done to change that at this point in the season.

Simultaneous Failure Across Both Sides of the Pacific

What makes 2026 unusual is that the weakness is not confined to one region. Alaska and Russia are failing simultaneously. That is the defining characteristic of the Perfect Salmon Storm: the normal geographic diversification of global salmon supply is not functioning as a buffer this year. When one region has a poor season, buyers turn to the other. In 2026, both are poor at the same time.


What This Means for Salmon and Red Caviar Supply

The supply implications are already being felt and will extend well into 2027:

  • Wild Alaska salmon prices will rise. Less supply against similar or growing demand produces higher prices. Processors who locked in contracts at pre-season prices are absorbing losses; spot market prices for wild Alaska salmon products are moving significantly higher.
  • Red caviar and salmon roe availability will tighten considerably. Both Alaska and Russia are producing less roe this year. Premium ikura — whether from sockeye, chum, or pink salmon — will be scarcer and more expensive through at least mid-2027 as the 2026 pack works its way through inventory.
  • Farmed Atlantic salmon will not fully substitute. Farm-raised Atlantic salmon occupies a different market position from wild Pacific salmon. Buyers who want wild sockeye, wild coho, or authentic salmon roe do not have a farmed equivalent to turn to. The gap created by a poor wild harvest cannot be filled by farmed supply.
  • Japanese landings, when reported, will complete the picture. Japan’s salmon harvest — primarily chum from rivers in Hokkaido — has not yet been fully reported for 2026. Early indications are not positive. When those numbers are available, the full North Pacific picture will come into focus.

What We Are Watching Next

The 2026 season is not literally over. Some coho and late-season chum fishing will continue in Alaska and Russia into October. Japanese landings will be reported over the coming weeks. And the full processor-level data — how much of what was caught was processed into roe versus fillet versus other products — takes months to fully emerge.

We will update this analysis as those numbers become available. What we can say now is that the fundamental picture is unlikely to reverse materially. The fish that did not return in 2026 are not coming back. The roe that was not processed does not exist. The supply reduction is real.
