Pacific geoduck (Panopea generosa) is native to the Pacific Northwest and is produced from both wild fisheries and aquaculture. This guide focuses specifically on geoduck farming: how seed is produced, how young clams are planted and protected, how they grow, and how harvest is managed on aquaculture sites.
Geoduck aquaculture begins with hatchery-produced juvenile clams, often called seed. After the larval stage and early nursery growth, juveniles are transferred to suitable growing areas. In Washington, commercial geoduck aquaculture is commonly associated with intertidal tidelands, where young clams are planted into the substrate.
Young geoduck are vulnerable to predators. Growers can use protective structures during the early stage of cultivation while the clams establish themselves and burrow. These structures are temporary parts of the production process rather than the geoduck's permanent habitat.
Geoduck are bivalve shellfish that obtain food by filtering naturally occurring particles from the surrounding water. They do not require formulated feed in the way finfish or livestock do. As the clams grow, they remain buried in the sediment while their siphons reach toward the surface.
Growth and harvest timing vary with site conditions, husbandry, temperature, and market requirements. For that reason, we avoid presenting one fixed harvest age as if it applies to every farm.
At harvest, workers use water to loosen sediment around the deeply buried clam so it can be removed with less risk of damaging the shell or siphon. Harvesting temporarily disturbs the sediment at the harvest location, which is one reason environmental effects and site practices are important parts of aquaculture management.
Geoduck aquaculture should not be described simply as having “no environmental impact.” Washington agencies have studied effects associated with culture and harvest practices, including sediment disturbance and habitat questions. The better description is that geoduck farming is a regulated form of shellfish aquaculture whose impacts depend on site conditions and farming practices.

Farmed and wild geoduck are the same Pacific geoduck species when both are Panopea generosa, but their production systems differ. Farmed geoduck is intentionally planted and grown on aquaculture sites. Wild commercial geoduck in Washington is harvested from naturally occurring subtidal stocks under a separate fishery-management system.
Neither production method should automatically be called “better.” Responsible sourcing depends on the specific fishery or farm, applicable regulations, harvest practices, and handling after harvest.
