Mediterranean Smoked Tuna: Salad, Pasta & Appetizers
Mediterranean-Style Smoked Tuna Meals
Olives, lemon, tomatoes and fresh herbs provide a useful starting point for meals with smoked tuna. Choose a salad, pasta or small appetizer, then add bread or vegetables to complete the plate. These are Mediterranean-inspired variations, rather than claims of traditional recipes.
Choose Prepared Smoked Tuna
The recipes below use prepared hot-smoked tuna intended for ready-to-eat service. Follow its serving and heating directions. Check the method and availability on our Smoked Yellowfin Tuna listing; this product is yellowfin, not bonito or albacore. Raw tuna steaks need a separate cooking step.
1. Tomato, Olive and Tuna Salad
For two: combine 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, ½ cup sliced cucumber, ¼ cup sliced olives and ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced. Whisk 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, ½ teaspoon dried oregano and black pepper. Dress the vegetables, then add 6 ounces prepared smoked tuna.

Serve over greens or with pita. For a richer version, add ½ avocado, 2 tablespoons crumbled pasteurized-milk feta or a small handful of toasted nuts. Taste before adding salt. For a potato-and-egg variation, follow the measured Niçoise-style smoked tuna salad recipe.
2. Tomato-Caper Smoked Tuna Pasta
For two to three: use 8 ounces dry pasta, 6 ounces prepared smoked tuna, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, 1 tablespoon drained capers, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and ¼ cup chopped basil.
- Cook pasta according to its package, reserving ½ cup cooking water before draining.
- Warm oil in a skillet. Cook garlic gently until fragrant, then add tomatoes and capers and cook until the tomatoes soften.
- Add pasta and a little reserved water, tossing to coat. Fold in tuna according to its heating directions.
- Finish with lemon and basil. Add pepper and a little grated Parmesan if desired.
Sun-dried tomato variation: add 2 tablespoons drained chopped sun-dried tomatoes with the cherry tomatoes. Add ½ cup peas cooked according to their package for another option.

Creamy variation: replace the lemon juice with ¼ cup cream, warming it with the tomato mixture before adding pasta. Finish with 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan. This is a cream-sauce variation without raw eggs. For more options, see our smoked tuna pasta guide.
3. Tomato-Basil Crostini
Makes 12 pieces: toast 12 baguette slices. Drain ½ cup diced tomatoes, then mix with 4 ounces prepared smoked tuna, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 tablespoon chopped capers and 2 tablespoons chopped basil. Spoon onto the toast just before serving. Finish with a little balsamic glaze if desired.
For a creamy base, spread the toast with pasteurized-milk ricotta or cream cheese before adding tuna. See our bruschetta variations for white beans and burrata.
4. Mini Pepper Bites
Makes 12 halves: halve six mini sweet peppers and remove the seeds. Mix 4 ounces prepared smoked tuna with 3 ounces cream cheese, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon chopped dill or parsley. Divide among the pepper halves. Keep refrigerated until serving.
What to Serve Alongside
Choose warm pita and hummus with the salad, roasted zucchini with pasta, or olives and marinated artichokes with the appetizers. Drain oily or briny toppings and add them sparingly so the meal does not become overly salty.
Preparation and Storage
Keep perishable ingredients refrigerated, assemble chilled dishes close to serving and follow the shortest applicable ingredient storage instructions. Mixing fish with dressing does not extend its shelf life. Pregnant, older or immunocompromised diners should avoid refrigerated smoked seafood unless cooked in a dish; see FDA guidance.
