Ahi Tuna Sustainability: Sourcing, Stocks & Buying Guide
Ahi Tuna Sustainability: What to Check Before You Buy
When choosing yellowfin tuna, look beyond a general “sustainable seafood” claim. Ask which fishery supplied the fish, where it was caught, and what documentation supports the claim. A species name alone does not tell you how an individual shipment was harvested.
What Do Current Stock Assessments Say?
NOAA’s Atlantic yellowfin tuna profile reports that the stock is not overfished and is not subject to overfishing, citing the 2024 assessment. Its Pacific yellowfin tuna profile also reports those findings for the eastern Pacific and western and central Pacific stocks, citing the assessments listed on that page. These are regional findings; they should not be applied automatically to every tuna fishery worldwide.
Stock assessments change as new evidence becomes available. Check the source’s assessment date when comparing claims. A general statement that all ahi tuna is endangered or overfished does not provide buyers with a useful picture of a particular fishery.

Three Questions for Your Supplier
- Which species and catch area? Request the species and harvest region for the product you intend to order. A processing or shipping location alone does not identify the fishing grounds.
- How was it caught? Ask about fishing gear and the fishery’s measures to manage bycatch. NOAA describes gear restrictions, monitoring and other measures for U.S. yellowfin fisheries; those details should not be assumed for an unidentified source.
- What supports the certification claim? If a product is advertised as MSC certified, request confirmation that the certification applies to that product and its supply chain.
What MSC Certification Means
The MSC fisheries standard considers fish stocks, environmental impacts and fishery management. Independent assessors evaluate participating fisheries. Certification is more specific than a general description such as “premium,” “wild-caught” or “responsibly sourced.”
The product links below are for comparing tuna cuts and formats. Their inclusion is not a claim that these products are MSC certified. Ask us about available origin and sourcing information for the item you are considering.
Choose the Tuna Format That Fits Your Meal
- Frozen yellowfin tuna steaks for portioned steak preparations.
- Fresh yellowfin tuna steaks for a chilled delivery option.
- Frozen yellowfin saku blocks for an even block format.

Common Buyer Questions
Is all wild-caught tuna sustainable?
“Wild-caught” describes how the fish was produced. Assess the identified fishery and supporting information before drawing a sustainability conclusion.
Does buying frozen tuna tell me anything about the fishery?
Fresh and frozen describe product condition. Ask the same sourcing questions for either format.
Can I use a general tuna rating for a specific product?
First match the species, catch area and fishing method to the rating. If those details are unavailable, do not assume the rating applies.
