How to Buy Fish Online: Cuts, Weights, Fresh & Frozen
How to Buy Fish Online: Read the Product Page Before Ordering
A clear fish listing should tell you what will arrive—not just how appealing it looks. Use this guide to check species, cut, weight, product condition, and shipping before you place an order.
1. Choose the Species and Cut
Start with the dish. Fillets are convenient for baking and pan-searing; steaks offer a different shape and may include a center bone; whole fish requires more preparation. For mild options, see our mild-fish guide.
For example, our Pacific whiting is HGT—headed, gutted, and tailed. It is not a box of ready-cut fillets. Read preparation details before substituting one product for another.

2. Separate Order Weight from Piece Weight
A 10 lb case and a 6–8 oz portion describe different things: one is the total purchase, the other is an individual piece. Natural products may have approximate piece counts. Check the selected variant rather than relying on the photograph.
Our Fresh Silver Salmon (Coho) has a total order weight of 6–10 lb. A seasoning choice does not automatically change the weight unless the product listing says it does.
3. Check Fresh or Frozen
Fresh Fish is shipped chilled with gel ice via UPS Overnight. Frozen Fish is shipped with dry ice. Choose a format that fits your cooking date and storage space.

Fresh halibut portions and frozen Pacific halibut fillets have separate listings. Do not assume that all halibut on the site has the same product condition.
4. Review Preparation and Ingredients
Look for skin-on or skinless, bone-in or boneless, and plain or seasoned. Read ingredient and allergen information for marinades. Freshness alone does not establish suitability for raw consumption; follow the product’s intended-use instructions.
5. Read Sourcing Claims Carefully
Check the species, stated origin, and wild-caught or farmed description. A certification or specific origin claim should apply to the product being sold. Ask about missing details rather than inferring them from a broad collection title.
6. Check Delivery and Total Cost
Review the selected service, dispatch schedule, and checkout total. Plan to receive the package promptly. Read our delivery guide for receiving information and our value guide for comparing cost per portion.
7. Plan Storage and the First Meal
Follow the package directions: fresh fish and frozen fish need different storage plans. Use the frozen fish storage guide when planning freezer meals. Match the cut to a recipe such as grilled fish with lemon and herbs.
Browse our Fish collection, then choose Fresh Fish or Frozen Fish for your meal schedule.
Before Checkout
Confirm the species, selected variant, total order weight, preparation, product condition, ingredients, shipping service, and sale policy. If any of those are unclear, ask before ordering.
