How to Reheat Crab: Legs, Clusters, Whole Crab & Meat
Reheating crab is different from cooking raw crab: many retail crab products are already cooked, so the goal is to warm them without drying the meat. Always check the product label first because raw and precooked products require different handling.

Best Reheating Method by Crab Format
Shell-On Legs and Clusters
Steaming is a useful default because moist heat warms shell-on crab without submerging it. Arrange the crab above simmering water, cover, and heat only until the thickest section is hot throughout.

Boiling can also warm shell-on crab, but it puts the product directly in water. Oven reheating works well for larger batches when the crab is covered so it does not dry out.
Whole Cooked Dungeness Crab
Whole cooked crab can be gently steamed or warmed covered in the oven. If it is already cleaned and cooked, avoid treating it like a live crab that needs a full cooking cycle.
For Dungeness-specific storage, see How to Store Dungeness Crab.
Picked Crab Meat
Picked meat is delicate. When possible, fold it into a hot pasta, soup, sauce or other dish near the end of cooking rather than repeatedly heating the meat by itself.
Reheating Frozen Crab
Check whether the product is raw or precooked. For precooked frozen crab, refrigerator thawing usually gives more even reheating. Some products can be reheated from frozen; follow the package directions and allow extra time for the thickest sections.
For Dungeness clusters specifically, use Dungeness Crab Clusters: Thawing, Reheating, Serving & Storage.
Can You Microwave Crab?
A microwave can heat crab, but it is easy to overheat thin or exposed pieces before thicker sections are warm. For shell-on legs, clusters and whole crab, steaming or covered oven reheating generally gives better control.
If microwaving a small amount of picked cooked crab, use short intervals and stop once it is heated through. Avoid repeated cycles that continue cooking and drying the meat.
Food-Safety Basics
Keep cooked crab refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below and refrigerate leftovers promptly. USDA guidance generally gives cooked leftovers about 3–4 days under refrigeration. When reheating leftovers, USDA guidance uses 165°F (74°C) as the reheating target.
Do not rely on shell color as a temperature test, and do not taste food of questionable storage history to decide whether it is safe.
