A King Crab Dinner and a Family Story from the Crab Fishery

King crab has been part of our family's seafood story since long before Global Seafoods existed. Oleg Nikitenko's father studied fisheries engineering at Dalrybvtuz and spent a student summer practice at sea during a crab expedition.

He remembered a vessel known in the family as the “Seventh Crabber,” an older coal-fired transport that had been converted to receive crab from smaller boats. Live crab came aboard, was cooked and processed, and meat was prepared for canning. He also remembered cooked crab being placed in large cages and lowered into cold ocean water to cool.

His favorite way to eat it was much simpler than the processing operation around him: freshly cooked crab with Russian mustard. This family recollection describes an earlier era; it is not a statement about today's commercial processing or handling requirements.

The Idea Behind This King Crab Dinner

The dinner shown here keeps king crab at the center of the plate. Cooked crab is served with sushi rice, mango salsa, avocado, garlic-fried potatoes, and warm butter. Each component has a different role without requiring heavy seasoning on the crab itself.

Current options can be found in the King Crab collection, including Alaskan Red King Crab Legs, Golden King Crab, and King Crab Leg Pieces.

Building the Plate

Cooked King Crab

First determine whether your crab is raw or precooked. Raw crab requires full cooking. Precooked crab should generally be heated only as needed rather than subjected to prolonged additional cooking. For a live product, follow shipment-specific handling instructions and then use a full cooking method.

Sushi Rice

Seasoned rice gives the dish a neutral base and mild acidity. It can be shaped as a base for picked crab or served beside shell-on sections.

Mango Salsa and Avocado

Mango adds fruit and acidity; avocado adds a softer, richer texture. Keep both lightly seasoned so they do not dominate the crab.

Garlic-Fried Potatoes

Potatoes turn the plate into a fuller meal and provide a warm, crisp contrast to the seafood.

Warm Butter

Melted butter with restrained garlic, lemon, or herbs can be served on the side or spooned lightly over the crab. For alternatives, see King Crab Dipping Sauces.

Using the Shell for Presentation

If you are preparing a whole crab and the shell is suitable for presentation, a cleaned shell can be used as a serving vessel. Otherwise, a platter works just as well. The important part is keeping edible meat separate from discarded shell fragments and handling cooked seafood safely.

Preparation Depends on the Product

King crab sold online does not all arrive in the same condition. Live, raw frozen, and precooked frozen products require different handling.

  • Precooked legs: thaw safely if frozen and reheat without prolonged cooking.
  • Raw crab: cook fully.
  • Live crab: follow the supplier's arrival and handling instructions, then cook fully.

From an Earlier Crab Expedition to Today's Table

The family story behind this dinner is useful precisely because it does not need embellishment. Crab harvesting, processing, refrigeration, shipping, and fishery management have changed enormously. The memory that survived was the food itself: freshly cooked crab and mustard after a day surrounded by the work of a crab expedition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does king crab need a complicated sauce?

No. Butter, lemon, mustard, or another restrained sauce can be enough. More elaborate accompaniments are a matter of preference.

Can I use precooked king crab for this dinner?

Yes. Reheat it gently according to the product format and avoid prolonged additional cooking.

Can I use golden king crab instead of red king crab?

Yes. They are different species, but either can work in this style of meal. Follow the handling and preparation instructions for the specific product.

Was the “Seventh Crabber” part of today's Global Seafoods supply chain?

No. It is a family recollection from Oleg Nikitenko's father's student practice during an earlier crab-fishing era.
