Pole-and-line fishing: One hook, one fish. Species-selective; bycatch is near-zero. The gold standard for tuna and similar pelagic species. Slower and more labor-intensive than industrial methods, which is why it’s less common.

What does “sustainable seafood” actually mean?
A seafood choice is sustainable when it meets three criteria simultaneously: (1) the fish population is healthy enough to withstand the harvest level without long-term decline; (2) the harvest method does not cause unacceptable damage to habitat or non-target species; and (3) effective management systems exist to monitor the fishery and adjust harvest limits as conditions change. A fish can fail on any one of these three counts and not be considered sustainable even if it passes the other two.
How can I tell if seafood is sustainably sourced?

Is farmed seafood sustainable?
