History of Lobster Fishing: From Coastal Harvest to Modern Management
American lobster has supported coastal communities in New England and Atlantic Canada for generations. The modern fishery developed alongside changing markets, fishing gear, transportation, scientific monitoring, and increasingly detailed management rules.
Early Coastal Harvest
Indigenous coastal communities harvested shellfish long before the modern commercial lobster industry developed. By the 19th century, lobster harvesting in New England had become increasingly commercial as coastal markets expanded and transportation improved.
From Local Food to Wider Markets
Rail and later refrigerated transportation made it possible to move lobster farther from the coast. As distribution improved, lobster reached more urban markets and restaurants, helping transform it from a highly local product into a nationally recognized seafood.

How Lobster Gear Changed
The fishery evolved from early wooden traps to modern traps built for repeated hauling and regulated commercial use. Current fisheries also rely on vessel electronics, reporting, trap tags, gear-marking rules, and biological monitoring.
Conservation and Regulation
Maine and federal lobster management now includes detailed rules and monitoring. Depending on the management area, measures can include minimum and maximum size limits, protection of egg-bearing and V-notched females, trap limits, reporting requirements, gear rules, and restrictions designed to address protected-species interactions.
Maine’s Department of Marine Resources also maintains long-running lobster monitoring and research programs, while NOAA Fisheries and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission participate in regional stock assessment and management.

Why the Fishery Still Matters
Lobster remains important to working waterfronts, dealers, processors, distributors, restaurants, seafood retailers, and coastal tourism. Its economic importance changes over time with landings, prices, fuel, labor, trade, environmental conditions, and regulation, so current landings and value should be taken from official datasets rather than fixed figures in an evergreen article.
Current Stock Context
American lobster is managed as multiple stocks rather than one uniform population. NOAA’s 2025 stock assessment summary reports that Gulf of Maine/Georges Bank and Southern New England have different stock conditions, which is one reason broad claims such as “the lobster population is healthy everywhere” are misleading.
