September 08, 2024

Smoked tuna tostadas topped with avocado, pico de gallo, and cilantro on a wooden board

Smoked Tuna Tostadas

Crisp corn tostadas hold a layer of avocado, smoky tuna and fresh toppings. This recipe makes eight small tostadas, serving about four as a light meal with sides.

Use prepared smoked tuna labeled ready to eat for these toppings. Check the smoking method and serving instructions on our Smoked Yellowfin Tuna listing. Raw tuna needs a separate cooking method.

Ingredients

  • 8 ready-made corn tostada shells
  • 8 oz prepared ready-to-eat smoked tuna
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • ½ cup pico de gallo, drained
  • ¼ cup prepared pickled red onion
  • ¼ cup cilantro leaves and lime wedges

Chipotle crema: mix ½ cup sour cream with 1 finely chopped chipotle pepper in adobo, 1 teaspoon adobo sauce and 1 tablespoon lime juice. Adjust the heat to taste and keep refrigerated.

Assembly

  1. Warm tostada shells according to their package directions if desired.
  2. Mash the avocado with a little lime juice. Toss cabbage with 1 tablespoon lime juice and drain excess liquid.
  3. Spread a thin layer of crema on each shell, followed by avocado.
  4. Divide tuna, cabbage, pico de gallo and pickled onion among the shells.
  5. Finish with cilantro and serve promptly with lime wedges. Taste before adding salt.

Variations and Sides

Replace pico de gallo with diced mango mixed with onion, cilantro and lime. For another sauce, combine 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon sriracha and ½ teaspoon lime juice.

Drained canned smoked tuna can work, following its label directions. For smaller appetizers, use purchased mini tostadas. Rice, black beans, grilled corn or jicama slaw make useful sides.

For soft tortillas, see our smoked tuna taco recipes. Prepare the toppings separately for a party and assemble small batches as needed.
